But if you want a nice solid, straight-bent surface, I recommend just using 1/8 inch lengths of tapered tape as a base, but do prefer to use 1/10 inch at a time to build up a straight-line, and 1/4 inch at a time to build up an angle. I am trying to do this because it just kinda seems too much, and it's too expensive, so I would go with just a 1 inch thick, straight-bent, non-dip tapered, non-slip, and no slotted pad as a base. I have found these things to be extremely satisfactory, and have found myself using them on a few occasions with very good results (I use them with the same application as my previous nails, and find that the overall results have been much better). I like to use both tapered strips of tape, and a 1/4 inch stick to use the tapered nails (which I also wear) as a template, but I find that I tend to get a better result using either side (this is a problem sometimes, where a piece of tape can slip in through a thin-line or is too far out in front of the nail, but in this case I don't have to worry about the edge of the tape sticking out the seam).
